One Direction for ballet?

Stacey MacNaught |

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MmqeOZXhycg Rumour has it that music mogul Simon Cowell has announced plans for a One Direction ballet following the teenage success of the recently launched One Direction movie. Presumably cashing in on young girls' love for the five members of the boy band. It seems that Cowell will stop at nothing to promote his work, even merging popular culture with one of the oldest art forms. Whilst many may argue strongly against this venture, Cowell must be commended for his timing. Classical and modern ballet amongst all dance techniques, is gaining popularity. More and more people now have increased dance knowledge in order to engage sufficiently with ballet, which has the capacity to appeal to all ages and dance abilities, be it little, some or none! It was also recently rumoured that leading member of One Direction Harry Styles had the desire to take ballet lessons as Rolling Stone Mick Jagger did in order to maintain his athletic physique and preserve his youth. The One Direction ballet lightbulb moment may have resulted from this, or may always have been within Cowell's long-term plans for the boys? Cowell was reported to have been asked 'why a One Direction ballet?', answering "because I can" - a typical Cowell response. Cowell's music company Syco is also behind the new West End musical I Can't Sing in a tongue-in-cheek view of the highs and pitfalls of the hit TV talent show The X Factor. Despite having no artistic input in the show - except perhaps for requesting that Cowell be played by the younger, attractive Nigel Harman - Cowell and Syco are fully supportive of this young musical in its early days. Who knows how long it will last!
